Zane is easy-going, spontaneous, and inventive. Zane has a twin sister named Zoey. They love and annoy each other as only close siblings can. Being twins certainly does not make things any better. Being two minutes older, Zane assumes he should be in charge. Zoey, uh, disagrees.
They just moved to the town of Meridian, home to a mysterious Dream Research Center, where their father works as the replacement of a missing professor, Dr. D. – who secretly left the supercomputer ZEUS in his attic that the twins discovered.

The supercomputer ZEUS is Zane and Zoey's biggest help. He transports them into the Dreamworlds and helps them figure out their neuro-gear, super-gadgets essential for their adventures. It is from Zeus that the Mercer twins learned about the workings of the Dreamworlds. Built into Dr. D.’s attic, ZEUS “hides” when not in use. When he activates, the attic transforms into a super-high-tech Command and Control Center.
ZEUS has many personality quirks, one of which is chatting with Zane and Zoey like a curious younger texting buddy (“DF, soc’r plyr, Todd, in Drmwlds – jst got swl’d by 3-hed’d Momok. Plz help NOW!”).

Skinny and tall and Indian-American, Patel and Tucker are geeky best buddies who latch onto Zane his first day at school. Tucker and Patel help – kind of. They do their best but these two are not exactly superhero material. They’re more the kind of guys who collect superhero figurines.
They are the only ones beside Zane and Zoey to know about the Dreamworlds. They try to hold the fort in the real world while Zane and Zoey battle the Momoks in the Dreamworld.

Better known as Dr. D, Dr. Alec Daedelus is a trustworthy ally. Being the creator of ZEUS, Dr. D and ZEUS had a very close relationship. However, he went missing suddenly. ZEUS hopes his new friends Zane and Zoey can help find Dr. D.

Dr. Mercer is a neurology professor. Doug and Lydia are firm but loving parents. Both are a little concerned about how the twins have been acting oddly lately, but they attribute it to Zane and Zoey being 14 and having to adjust to a new town.

Todd is a handsome 16-year-old top athlete. Needless to say, he is the most popular boy in his grade. Much to Zoey's amazement and confusion, he takes notice of her. Truth to be told, though, Todd is just a regular guy inside.

Dennis is a pimply, red-headed, 18-year-old former student who spends his life in the comic-book/game/gadget store he inherits. Beasley goes to absurdly elaborate lengths to unmask the truth about Zane and Zoey – but he never quite succeeds.

Vi is a 14 year old girl. Vi and Steph have known each other like, for-ever, know all the gossip, and are so caught up in themselves that they don’t notice the odd things Zoey has to do in Dreamwalker crises.

Dave is a big, happy bear of a Hawaiian who runs the local coffee shop, Sweet Dreams Diner. Zane and Zoey often go there to meet their friends and have a nice meal. People trust Dave, so he knows all of the town gossip.

Icela is the evil Queen of Nightmares. She glimpsed a path into the real world, and now she wants to cross over! She relentlessly attempts to capture Zane and Zoey, hoping that they will help her cross over to the real world. She also ruthlessly robs people's dreams to give her the energy needed to cross over.
When her plans do not go according to her will, Icela enjoys beating up her assistants, Nodd and Druul.

Nodd and another follower named Druul, work feverishly to make Dreamworld ruler Icela happy – more Momoks, bigger Momoks, scarier Momoks, world-to-world travel -- but they never seem to succeed. They are much abused by Icela, which makes them try even harder (while complaining, of course), which in turn results in even more jammed machineries and things blowing up.
